We celebrated St. Nicholas Day when we were children, and when our children were small, they celebrated too. Imagine my surprise when we found out not everyone celebrated that little holiday. My Mom was German Irish from Minnesota and we lived in a similar community in Iowa where nearly everyone else either celebrated or knew what it was. When we lived in upstate New York no one had heard of it other than one other neighbor. Our kids are long since out of the nest but we still buy little treats for each other and remember the children’s excitement.
