This month I have a new article out in the Fall 2008 issue of BeerNW magazine. After some requisite background about Celiac Disease and gluten intolerance for readers, I discuss how some of the local breweries in the Pacific Northwest are championing GF beers. Places like Widmer in Portland, OR and Deschutes in Bend, OR. At the conclusion of the article, I include a description of many of the widely available GF beers in the United States in an extensive sidebar. If you’ve read some of our previous blogs about GF beer, some of the info in the article will be redundant. However, if you’re looking for one-stop shopping when it comes to GF beer information, the article can be a great resource.

Widmer! I’ve not drinken their beer (I’ve never been a beer fan) but their brewery/restaurant is a special place for the Artist and I whenever we’re in Portland.

Sadly, Widmer is no longer brewing the GF beer. They experimented with it as a seasonal, but it never sold well. Hopefully they’ll try again soon!

Dang it! I didn’t know Widmer had tried a GF beer either. Hopefully they will try again. I keep asking Deschutes when they will have their GF beer on tap in the Portland pub (it was supposed to be available in September) and they keep postponing it. The new time frame is apparently the end of November.

Hopefully Deschutes will get its Gluten Free Golden Ale on tap at the Portland location soon! If you try it, please let me know how it tastes, and how you like it. With a blend of sorghum, brown rice and chestnuts, it sounds like it has great potential!
